If you live near the lake, you already know the loop: 2.6 miles of asphalt, the skyline behind you on the eastbound stretch, geese negotiating right of way at the north shore. What has changed in the last two summers is what happens when you step off the path. The west edge of the park, particularly the block anchored by the Lakehouse condo building on Raleigh Street, has quietly become the kind of corridor where a Saturday can start with a paddle rental and end with dumplings on a patio without moving your car.
This is a guide to the next four weekends written for people who already live here. It skips the "why Sloan's Lake is special" preamble. You know why. Here is what to actually do with it before Labor Day.
The last weekend of August belongs to the boats
Block off August 29 and 30. The 2026 Colorado Dragon Boat Festival takes place August 29–30, 2026 at Sloan's Lake Park, with dragon boat races on the lake, cultural performances, marketplace vendors, and food from the Taste of Asia area.
Races start at 8 a.m. and run until dusk. More than 50 teams. Two Taste of Asia food courts. Free admission.
More than 50 teams of boaters race across Sloan Lake, with races starting at 8 a.m. and ending at dusk for a full day of competition. If you have watched the festival in past years you already have a favorite viewing spot. If you have not, the north shore near the boathouse gives you the best angle on the finish line, and the south lawn is where the performance stages set up.
A note residents tend to forget by the time August arrives: the west parking lots off Sheridan fill by 9 a.m. both days. Walking or biking in from Perry, Newton, or Stuart is faster than any parking strategy you have tried in past years. The official festival page at Visit Denver posts the schedule closer to the weekend if you want to time a specific performance.
The Lakehouse block did something to dinner
Two years ago, dinner near the lake meant a short drive to Highland or a walk to Edgewater. That math changed in March 2024. Restaurateur Lon Symensma expanded his restaurant group twice that month. On March 22, he introduced a new Italian concept, Gusto, in the Lakehouse condo building next to Sloan's Lake. A week later, the third location of ChoLon, his modern Asian eatery, debuted in the same building, bringing staples like its popular French onion soup dumplings and kaya toast to the neighborhood.
The two restaurants sit side by side at 1691 N. Raleigh Street, sharing a lake-facing patio. That is the detail worth internalizing if you have not been. ChoLon at Sloan's Lake has a patio with lake views. Late August evenings on a west-facing patio, on a lake, in Denver, is a short list of experiences the city offers. Reserve.
A few practical notes from what the restaurants have published themselves:
- The French onion soup dumplings are the item to order at ChoLon if you have not been. They travel between locations, but the Sloan's Lake room was built for them.
- Reverse Happy Hour runs Friday and Saturday, 8 to 9 p.m., with the same deals as regular happy hour served late. If you are coming off a long lake walk and want to eat without a reservation, that hour is the move.
- Gusto is the Italian sibling. Different room, different menu, same kitchen discipline.
If you have lived here since before 2024, take a friend who has not seen the block since then. The reaction is the reason to go.
A short list of things worth locking in before Labor Day
Not everything at the lake is an event. Some of it is a Tuesday.
- Sunset yoga on the lawn. Yoga Social runs a Sunset Yoga in the Park series on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Sloan's Lake. Bring a mat and small cash. The south lawn near the boathouse is the usual setup.
- THE Denver 5k around the lake. Denver's Sloan Lake is the setting for THE Denver 5k, a race around the lake in the shadow of Denver's skyline. If you have been meaning to run the loop and need the peer pressure, this is the version with a shirt.
- Paddleboards and kayaks. During warmer months, local outfitters near the lake offer stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, and other watercraft rentals, with availability seasonal and weather-dependent. Weekday mornings are glass. Saturday afternoons are chop from the boat wakes on the west side.
- A movie at Alamo Drafthouse. Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Sloan's Lake pairs first-run films with craft cocktails and elevated theater snacks. The Wednesday afternoon showings are where you find seats without planning.
None of these need a reservation more than a day in advance. All of them are on the west side of the park, meaning you can chain two together on foot.
When you want to leave the lake without leaving the neighborhood
Cross Sheridan and you are in Edgewater. The single most useful thing that has happened to the neighborhood in the last few years, from a resident's standpoint, is the Edgewater Public Market. Just across Sheridan Boulevard and a few blocks to the west sits the Edgewater Public Market, a collection of local food and drink stalls including Black Box Bakery for inventive croissants and pastries and Saigon Noodle Club by Pho King Rapidos for modern Vietnamese fare. The building also houses a bar and a variety of boutiques selling craft chocolate, plants, and other locally made goods.
The play here is a Saturday morning croissant from Black Box, then a walk down Historic 25th Avenue. Edgewater's Historic 25th Avenue is a stretch filled with local boutiques, coffee shops, and neighborhood eateries. If you have not walked it in a year, the storefront turnover is worth an afternoon.
Two other directions worth pointing out for out-of-town guests, which residents forget they can also enjoy:
- East to Convergence Station. Meow Wolf Denver's Convergence Station offers interactive installations to the east. A short drive, an easy rideshare.
- West on Colfax to Casa Bonita. West along West Colfax Avenue in Lakewood, Casa Bonita is the legendary Mexican restaurant known for its cliff divers, colorful décor, and "South Park" fame. Reservations remain the sport they are.
The practical stuff residents forget
Two things worth putting in your notes app because they come up more often than you would think.
Park hours. Sloan's Lake Park is generally open daily from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., though hours may vary for special events. The 5 a.m. opening is the reason the sunrise walking crowd exists. The 11 p.m. close is why the north lot empties abruptly on summer nights.
No swimming. Swimming is not permitted in Sloan's Lake due to water quality and safety regulations. Every summer a new resident tries. Every summer a park ranger explains.
Dogs. Dogs are welcome but must remain on a leash at all times, and owners should clean up and keep pets away from protected wildlife areas near the water. The east shore near the reeds is the wildlife area in question. Give the herons room.
Parking on festival weekends. Street parking is available around much of the park's perimeter, with small lots near playgrounds and boat ramps, but spaces fill quickly on weekends and during events. Restated because it is the thing residents most consistently misjudge on Dragon Boat weekend.
Why any of this matters if you already live here
Because the reason the west side of the lake now works as a full-day circuit, and the reason a chef with three Denver restaurants chose the Lakehouse building for two of them, and the reason weekday paddleboard rentals now sell out by noon, is that this neighborhood is not the same place it was in 2019. If you bought before then, the block around your home has quietly reorganized itself around the lake in a way that shows up in daily life before it shows up in comps.
Enjoy August. The corridor is only going to keep filling in.
